Manga Title: REC – Kimi ga Naita Hi

Released: 2010

Artist/Author: Makino Aoi

Genre: Drama, Romance, Shoujo, Tragedy

I just read this manga and I cried in the end. Just like the genre, tragedy, the story start in sad ways and end in sad ways too.

This story is about Aizawa Minami, a high school girl that is never shed a tear and an ex-actor, Satoru Wakabayashi who is also going to the same school as her. The story started with the rumor going around the school that Aizawa likes to film things and always carry camcorder anywhere. Because she is known as a cold girl in school, a junk mail about a dead cat film was rumored to be filmed by her. Satoru Wakabayashi saved her when boys are trying to pick a fight with her just because she cut the computer lines at school. Aizawa felt anxoius about him, yet she never show any expression. From that on, they become friends.

Aizawa said that she never filmed human, because she hate them. But, she started to film Satoru and said that she would not film things that she don’t like. One day, she discovered that Satoru never smile like he meant it. She was getting mad at him, and asked him to show her the real smile to film it. Satoru said that he was smiling all the time. Because she got really mad, she left him and the camcorder. Satoru took the camcorder and saw the content. They were all film about him smiling. But when he saw it, his expression getting really sad.

The day after, Satoru didn’t go to school for about a week. Aizawa thought that it may be her fault. But suddenly, she got a phone call from him at school. Satoru said he wants to see her. She dashed at the place where Satoru firstly approached her. Satoru had waited for her there. He gave her the camcorder she left the past days. That way, she discovered the real reason why he absent, why he always give fake smiles, and why he quit acting. But the facts that make her cried a lot in the end was about what he feels. And, that’s ‘REC’ about: ‘the day you cried’.

I really cried in the climax and the of the story. The advice I could give you is: prepare some tissues..

It’s the story about a job that’s only a few person would do it. Their family would be ashamed if they knew that one of them had this job. This story tried to tell people about what’s Japanese people thinking about this kind of job. No one would do it, but in the other hand, they need it. The job is about preparing the dead for funerals.

I noticed that in Japan, preparing for funerals are quite complicated, but gentle and meaningful in the other hand. It also contains a lot of Japanese cultures in funerals. It’s kind of an important and holy ceremony, so the audience could also feel the essential and the meaning of death. They would think that everyone would die, but we all want to die peacefully and being loved with people we love. It gives me a feeling to live my life better so that I could have such a peaceful death. Oh, God, I wish it would come true.

This movie has received some awards, check this out for the details. In the end, I like this phrase:

Death isn’t the end. It’s a stage to go to the next stage.

It’s a gate.

(Tsuyako’s friend, character in movie Departure / Okuribito)

Liar Game: Game about Trust

24 Jan

Manga Title: Liar Game

Author / Artist: Kaitani Shinobu

Released: 2005

Genre: Drama, Mystery, Psychological, Seinen

The main character is Nao Kanzaki and Akiyama Shinichi. Nao Kanzaki firstly was just a ‘foolishly honest’ girl, but at the time goes by she follow the game, she’s getting stronger. Akiyama Shinichi was an ex-convict, but he appeared to be a brilliant university graduated in psychology. Those two always make the readers surprised by their action. Their enemies are also getting tricked sometimes by their action. But they aren’t always win. There are also time they have to feel defeated. This manga hasn’t been completed yet. The new chapters are keeping on released, so there are always surprising things awaited the readers.

I’m hooked up with this manga since I read the first chapter. It starts with manga, and then the drama is following. It’s kind of serious manga but amusing in some ways. The psychological aura let the readers also think about how to solve the game. The author keeps making the readers envious of what will the main characters do. The characters always making the surprising acts and make the game goes unpredictable. One of the manga genre is seinen, that means targeting readers 18 to 30 years old, often involving male heroes, themes of honor, and slapstick humor.

The games in Liar Game are coming one after another, and somehow it push the losing player to keep on playing it or they will be in debt. But there are also people who have won the game but they still keep on playing just because of their pride. This manga make me learn about people true nature. Liar Game is actually game about lying. At the start of the game, the players have a very intense feeling because no one in the game are worth to be trust. But, as the time goes by, with the agreement they make and cooperation, some people are learning to trust the other player and trying to be freed from the game without debt together. I don’t know how they will do that because the game rules are ridiculous, but the bond of trust that grows between them are somehow in contrast with the essential of the game. That’s why I choose this title of my post: Liar Game isn’t a game about lying, it’s a game about growing trust in people.
